Sun Urn and Flower Pot
This painting brought together for me the panorama and the intimacy, the directness and the mystical nudgings that are Assisi. The large clay urn is actually cracked and is now held together by strong diamonds of wire. At first, I was fascinated by the patterns of clay - cracks and wire-lines. As the painting evolved, the need to include this brokenness melted away. Strong, healing strokes formed this earthen vessel into a whole, giving it a quality of something ancient, yet young. I know its rebirth and the secret hidden its shadow.
The flowerpot, its companion, teems with vigor, stability and colorful life, offering up its bounty from Sister Earth to Brother Sky. I heard the singing of the land and treasured.
